Wedding Tip of the Day from Cookie Creatives by Jennifer

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Today’s wedding tip comes from New England and NYC/Westchester County wedding favors, Cookie Creatives by Jennifer!  Jennifer shares a tip for incorporating cookies into your wedding’s table top design.  Check out this great tip by Jennifer and visit the full expert advice article at my Kate Parker Wedding!

Pear Place Card Cookies

A good starting point to find inspiration for the cookie design is to start with the paper goods being used in the event (invitation, programs, menu cards, etc…).  It is often not hard to find an element to pull onto the cookie whether it’s hand-painted flowers to mimic letterpress or lace, a monogram, or simple stripes.  The cookies below used a three flower design which was prominent on all pieces of their paper suite.  We did two different cookies alternating alphabetically.  The ovals featured the flowers stenciled on while the flowers on the rectangles were hand-piped.

New England and NYC/Westchester County Guest Experience – Cookies Direct, In The Spotlight

Friday, January 8th, 2010

New England and NYC/Westchester County Guest Experience, Cookies Direct, is in the spotlight this week on my Kate Parker Wedding.  This guest experience will satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth!  Cookies Direct also creates gift baskets for your guests and designs the baskets to fit in perfectly with your wedding.  To learn a little more about this vendor, check out some of the information from Debbie Godowsky, the owner of Cookies Direct, below and view some pictures of their treats! ~AY

New England and NYC/Westchester County Guest Experience: Cookies Direct

Number of Years in Business Back in 1991, with two middle-school aged children, I had dreamed of starting some type of business of my own.  As a substitute teacher in the local school system, I knew my income would hardly make a dent in paying for college down the road. So one day at school, I challenged a group of high school seniors to come up with some type of creative, flexible home business. Their vote, not surprisingly, was for cookie care packages.

Three months later, Cookies Direct, primarily a cookie-of-the-month club for college students, was off and running. As in any business, things got off to a slow start, with me doing all of the cookie production, packaging, and shipping, as well as the sales and marketing of my product. But it didn’t take long for the word to spread literally throughout the world, as many of my first customers were American families living overseas with children attending school back here in the States.

Today with the help of seven primarily “stay at home” moms, we pump out as 300 dozen cookies in a given morning. My husband enjoys pitching in on the weekends where he can. But I still like to be the one who works directly with the customers. My customers like knowing they are dealing with just one person when they want to discuss their order.

And it is especially exciting working with brides and their moms. Everyone’s so happy! My daughter and I planned her wedding five years ago from start to finish, so I very much understand the importance of having things done right. Every thing done right!  And our welcome cookie boxes for out of town guests are no exception.

New England and NYC/Westchester County Guest Experience: Cookies Direct

Pricing Information:

Welcome Boxes: $18 each with personalized bags of coffee and your choice of cookie flavors.  The ribbon will be coordinated to your wedding colors.  We also personalize the gift cards attached to guest boxes, whether they be for friends or relatives.  We found that our unique boxes are really appreciated by the person receiving them. What could be better after a long trip to the wedding than sitting down with some homemade cookies? And there will be enough to nibble on in the morning with coffee, or take for the plane ride home.

Favors: Start at 2.25 for two cookies to a bag and are made to order for each couple.

Best of all, we have no minimums. Order one welcome box if you like, or 100.

What makes me stand out?

  • The packaging. Rather than using a standard gift bag, we tuck our cookies and coffee in a glossy white lidded box, complemented with your wedding colors for the ribbon.
  • Pricing. No hidden costs or extra fees. They are all a flat $18 each, regardless of the cookie flavors, gift card message, colors, or number of boxes in your order.  As for favors, they’re made to order.
  • Our gifts make sense. We agree it’s fun to include that locally brewed beer or bottle of wine, but it doesn’t make too much sense for those guests traveling by plane. We had to leave behind a bottle of very nice wine in the hotel for housekeeping last year when we attended a wedding in Minnesota. I bet that happens very often. Water and crackers in a gift bag are nice, but I guarantee that no one will say, “Oh yum!” they way they will when they open our boxes and see our cookies.
  • We work very closely with the bride to create exactly what she wants.  I like to think that we’re not an “online company” but a company with an “online presence”. Quality caring customer service is our number one priority. It really isn’t that difficult if you just put yourself in the customer’s shoes and treat them the way you would expect to be treated.

What’s the favorite part of my work? Little wedding boxes are fun and are always something new and different, whether it’s using different ribbon or shred, or making different types of cookies, like my coconut almond chocolate chip cookies, or even my oatmeal chocolate chip! And of course it goes without saying that I just love talking with the brides themselves.

What do I like to do in my spare time? I really don’t have much spare time.  Somewhere along the way over the past 18 years, I went from working at home to living at work. The internet never closes!  When I do have a little bit of time, I love to cook, do yoga, quilt, bike, knit, and spoil my 2 month old grandson.

What charity am I supporting and why? The JDRF, because my mom died in March of 2009 of diabetes-related health issues. My company also created a program to support our deployed soldiers called Club Nine. For $9, we will add an extra dozen cookies to a package headed out to a soldier. (We send 25-40 boxes a week!) They really appreciate this thoughtfulness from an anonymous donor.

Wedding Advice from Meagan Gilpatrick of Maine Seasons Events

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Meagan from Maine Seasons Events shares with brides some creative and practical ways to enhance a guest’s experience at a wedding. Check out some of Meagan’s great ideas!  ~LS

At Maine Seasons Events, we consider many details when choosing elements that will enhance our wedding guests’ experience.  Creating many outdoor weddings, and being in Maine, the weather changes often and sometimes dramatically-having rain ponchos and umbrellas stashed nearby, even on the sunniest of summer days has proven to be a smart idea.

While guests arrive and mingle prior to the wedding ceremony, beverage stations help quench their thirst on warm summer afternoons.  Bamboo fans attached to each wedding program and handed out at the entrance to the ceremony, allow guests to create their own cooling breeze, if Mother Nature isn’t providing one.  And though it is not a new idea, flip flops in baskets by the dance floor have saved many a box of Band Aids from being deployed!

Containers of insect repellent, in multiple forms, DEET and DEET free, are usually found almost empty at the end of a summer wedding on the Maine coast.  Custom embroidered hats for a sunny dock side rehearsal luncheon are a fun way to provide guests relief from the sun’s glare on the ocean.  Heaters in tents for cool autumn weddings, fun kid activates and foods for guests with little ones, and a quiet, comfortable and clean place for new mommies to nurse, feed and change their infants have been important guest specialties at our weddings.  After dinner snacks for dancers and late night party goers, a bouncy castle for kids or college friends to jump on (it’s happened), photo booths and memory tables, featuring photos of the couple as children, their parents and grandparents on their wedding days and even slideshows of the couple growing up, provide guests with sustenance and entertainment.  When thinking of your guests’ experience, consider the season, the weather, the temperature, the hour of the conclusion of the wedding and any special logistic or environmental factors that provide an opportunity to do a little something special.  In many cases guests have gone to great lengths, travel and expense to be with a couple on their wedding day, and it is a kind gesture and good hosting to consider their overall experience.

Living in New Hampshire, we know how viscous those pesky mosquitoes and gnats can be and with something so simple as a couple containers filled with bug spray, guests will be more at ease throughout the night.

Vendor Spotlight: Delicious Desserts

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

We had the pleasure of speaking with Lisa from Delicious Desserts and are truly excited to feature her and her meticulous creations in today’s vendor spotlight!

our_pastry_chef_photo

Company: Delicious Desserts
Pastry Chef: Lisa Raffael
Phone: 508.540.3352
Website: www.deliciousdesserts.net

Number of Years in Business: Just about 17 years now.

Pricing Information: Pricing starts around $5.25 per person.

What’s one of my favorite parts about my work? I love the personal element and creating something that reflects the personality of the couple.

What makes me stand out in my industry? I would have to say my experience in professional baking, and I currently teach a baking course at the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts.

What do I like to do in my spare time? When I DO have spare time, I love spending it with friends and playing the piano, which I have been doing since I was little.

What charity am I supporting and why? The American Cancer Society; I’ve know several people who’ve experienced cancer.  I also work with the Special Olympics and David’s House in New Hampshire which provides a home-away-from-home and support for families with children receiving treatment through Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

What advice do you give a bride when deciding on a cake design? Design the cake of your dreams; we’ll make the dreams come true!  And have it come from your heart.  Also, many times the bride gets stuck on the price per person.  Keep an open mind and don’t think about the price per person, instead think about your full budget and what you want the cake to look and taste like.  Often times, not all guests eat cake so brides who think they can only spend like $5 per person can actually afford $8 per person and get the true look and taste they want.

Check out some of Lisa’s fabulous work!
