New England, NYC, and LA Calligrapher Laura Hooper Calligraphy featured on Style Me Pretty!

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I just LOVE it when our fabulous vendors are editorially featured in other publications, both in print and on-line.  Style Me Pretty is a VERY fantastic and well-known wedding inspirations blog and they have a collection of hand-selected vendors they have called their “Little Black Book.”  I met the amazing wedding calligrapher, Laura Hooper of Laura Hooper Calligraphy in Las Vegas at Engage Encore 09 and I had seen her work prior, especially with the custom map she created for Maine wedding photographer, Emilie Sommer of Emilie Inc. Photography’s wedding in St. John that we attended and also assisted with her floral and event design!  Laura is so completely down to earth and her talents just amaze me.  That’s why we were thrilled when she decided to join the my Kate Parker Wedding family!  Anyway, my story is getting longer instead of shorter…

I just wanted to bring to your attention Laura’s featured today on the Style Me Pretty Little Black Book blog because my Kate Parker Wedding is about providing clients with the highest quality vendors we can find and the more editorial exposure our vendors get, the more it proves their worth and level of excellence so here’s the link!  Great work Laura! – KP

I LOVE when invitations are hand calligraphed.  The mix of the orange and deep pink really created a fabulously tropical feel too!

Laura Hooper Calligraphy on my Kate Parker WeddingThis invite is so classic and luxurious, with the mix of calligraphy and typed fonts.  I especially love the added calligraphy detail on the back of the envelope.

Probably Laura’s most well-known products are her incredible custom maps.  I think these are the best out there and her details from the wedding location to the little kissing fish in the ocean, she nails these every time.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island Calligraphy - Megan Chapin

Since wedding invitations are generally the first impression for guests, it’s important to pick a style and lettering that is reflective of your personality and tone of the wedding.

Love that this incorporates two letter styles to give it a bit of formality to a casual look.

Number of Years in Business: EFD Creative officially launched in February 2009. I’ve been planning events throughout my career—from my years as a fashion designer to more than 20 years as a graphic designer and marketer.

Preferred Locations: What I love about location is what it says about my clients. I recently did a wedding for a couple who is always outdoors – hiking, biking and just enjoying nature. Their wedding took place in the mountains in Vermont, which suited them perfectly, and inspired me in so many ways to combine the location with their personalities to create the touches and atmosphere that spoke to who they are as a couple. For me, the key aspect about location is how it serves as a backdrop to the main event — the wedding! — and its potential to showcase my clients.

Pricing Information: Because every event is unique, all pricing is determined per project. EFD Creative is available to meet for an initial free consultation.

What makes me stand out in what I do? I think what helps me stand out is my formal training as an artist and graphic designer. It is through the lens of a designer and years helping clients create the look and feel of their businesses that I approach my work as an event planner. More and more weddings are being branded in the same way, which I think is due to the growing popularity of design shows that highlight celebrity weddings, brides-to-be and other lifestyle events. People want to make a statement, and this is where I can make the most impact.

For me, it is important to understand who my clients are and what they want for their special day. From there I work to build an event that meets my clients’ hopes and dreams for their wedding day and brings artistry and an attention to detail that shines through from the first invitation to the final thank you card. Every client wants to make their “stamp” on the world as a new couple, and my goal is to help bring their vision to life. It’s such an exciting process, and the best reward is the thrill of the day when it all comes together!go

What’s the favorite part of my work? My favorite part of the job is the people. This is what event planning is about! I love working with the bride and watching her gain confidence in the process and the couple’s excitement when they see their vision become a reality! Weddings by their nature are a joyous occasion and I simply love being a part of this day. I also really enjoy the camaraderie of working with all the other vendors in the process. Everyone contributes their expertise to some aspect of the event – from the table linens to the flowers and photography. It is a grand mosaic that has to come together perfectly, and I love being the one to help guide every piece of the puzzle into place.

What do I like to do in my spare time? When I’m not running around for my business, I try to get outdoors to exercise and enjoy the fresh air! My husband has a motorcycle, so in the summer we love to take long rides, especially on Cape Cod. I also cherish my friendships and always try to squeeze in time to catch up with friends over shopping or dinner.

What charity am I supporting and why: There are three charities I support that are very important to me personally: the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) and the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Like many families, cancer has touched mine and I try to do what I can to support research efforts that will help find a cure. My husband developed diabetes as a juvenile, and since I met him I’ve learned so much about this disease and the great work that JDRF is doing. As for the ASPCA, I’ve had cats for nearly my entire adult life and think it’s important to support the ASPCA so that cats, dogs and other animals can find happy, loving homes.

Golf carts
Having golf carts is a great form of short distance transportation as they are typically quite affordable and easily accessible.
Table
The flowers at this wedding were done by Lilac Floral in Massachusetts.
Band
Cake
This beautiful cake was made by Delicious Desserts.  Notice the recurring seashell theme throughout the next couple of pictures.
Calligraphy
The silver seashell place card holders are adorable, I love the simplicity.
Invite
These Invitations were made by Edna herself and I think they came out beautifully . . .  and the seashell makes another appearance.

A ballet wrap can be a beautiful addition your bouquet and a jeweled embellishment can really complete the design.

1.  Plan ahead.  If you are ordering your invitations through a stationer, try to get clear information on how long the printing process will take.  Some local companies have quicker turnaround times if you need that.  If you’re running close on time, ask if the envelopes can be run first and sent ahead to the calligrapher while the rest of the order is in process.  Add about a week to whatever estimate you are given.

2. Try to be very organized and thorough about gathering your guest’s addresses.  Remember that the list you give to the calligrapher is exactly what is going to go onto the envelope (unless you are lucky enough to have someone catch your typos).  ALWAYS order at least 10% more invitations and envelopes than you think you need.  Calligraphers are human and occasionally make mistakes.  You are human and may have forgotten cousin Sue or your fiancé’s new boss.  It’s a lot more expensive to get extra envelopes/invitations after the fact.

3. Think about your guests’ reactions when your invitation arrives.  Won’t you want to WOW! them with the presentation?  Whether it’s funky or extravagant or classically elegant, the arrival of the envelope is the first look your guests will have of what your wedding will be like. You only have one chance to make that first impression.

4. Consider a “seating scroll” instead of (or in addition to) place cards.  Each scroll is designed for the particular bride and groom and becomes a keepsake of the day with all the guests listed for you to see over the years.  I’ve designed scrolls with illustrations to match the flowers at the wedding, with a painted representation of the venue, with motifs to match the china in the room the scroll will “live” after the wedding, with the pets that the bride and groom love, etc.  The design ideas are endless and the framed scroll will last long after the cake has been eaten.  The actual work on the scroll is done in the last 2 weeks before the wedding (with the table numbers going in just a few days before the wedding) so it’s a “doable” option for almost all couples.

5. Would your guests like to know who each member of your wedding party is and how they’re connected to you?  Consider a program that includes that information along with the order of service.  Would your guests like to know exactly what the menu is and what the sauces and embellishments are?  Consider a menu – one for each guest or one for each table that can be passed around.  You spent a long time deciding on the food details – let your guests enjoy the information too.  Are you having a signature drink?  Consider a sign on the bar that names it and gives its ingredients.  Are you donating to a charity in your guests names?  Consider a sign near the place cards or seating scroll that tells your guests what charity and perhaps why you support it.  As you can see, adding calligraphic details can help your guests to better know what all the plans you’ve made mean to you.

6. ENJOY the process and the day.  Especially enjoy the little things that go “wrong”.  They will be memorable to you – especially if you think you’ve planned every single detail perfectly – and they can be some of the best, most fun memories.  Stop every now and then during the day to take a deep breath and just absorb what’s going on.  The day will go by very fast … don’t be one of those brides who doesn’t remember it.  If you’ve chosen details you love, your guests will see your enthusiasm and joy and the energy around you will be electric.  ENJOY IT!!
