Number of years in business: I’ve been producing, shooting, and editing video for about 8 years now, and I’ve been running my own business for just over two years. It’s been a fun and exciting journey.
Preferred wedding venues/locations/styles: I shoot “cinematic” style . . . I capture the day as it happens and present it in a realistic way, but I look for those creative shots, angles, and editing techniques that make your wedding video fun to watch over and over!
Pricing Information: We always customize our packages based on your needs and what you’re looking for in a finished product. Our packages are reasonably priced and we’d love to work with you to customize a quote that fits into your wedding budget.
What makes you stand out? When all is said and done, you want a video that LOOKS and SOUNDS great, and that captures all of the important moments of your wedding day. We’ll give you that, but we also look for those fun shots, angles, and editing techniques that make your video fun to watch over and over!
What’s the favorite part of your work? I always enjoy meeting with the bride and groom-to-be to discuss their vision for the wedding video, and explaining to them how we’ll achieve what they’re looking for. There are many aspects of video production which people don’t think about, so it’s a lot of fun teaching people about what it is we do, and how we’ll fit into their wedding day.
If you have any spare time, how do you spend it? I enjoy listening to and making music.
Which charity(s) are you donating to and why? I think it’s absolutely awesome that the folks at myKPW are donating to these charities. I only had limited knowledge about each, so filling out my application to become part of the family was a great opportunity to look into each one a bit more… and ultimately, I couldn’t pick a favorite–they’re all great causes which rely on donations. let’s help them out!

Welcome to the third installment of the my Kate Parker Wedding series featuring wedding photography costs! We created this series to give you an inside look into a professional photographer’s job, and to demystify why their services can seem so expensive. So far, we’ve talked about Education/Experience, and Advertising/Marketing. Today, we’ll touch upon the Engagement Session- a great opportunity for you and your fiance to take some pictures together before the wedding!
ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS
It’s the big day- you’re both looking fabulous and you’re feeling like celebrities- there are cameras constantly snapping pictures of you! But you’re not used to all of this attention and you start feeling some anxiety…Uh oh- you’re camera shy! How to avoid this? Most photographers include an an engagement session in their packages to warm you up to the camera, and to capture a glimpse of your pre-married life for you to enjoy later on! Atlanta photographer, Graham Scobey writes:
“Engagement shoots are such a great way to get to know a couple in a low stress, high fun environment. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to capture the bride and groom as they truly are; no wedding dress, no tux, no distractions. It’s another chapter in the story of a couple’s journey, and our job is to tell the entire story. For this reason we include an engagement session in every one of our wedding packages; we force our brides and grooms to hang out with us!”
Engagement sessions factor into the cost of the photographer’s services because of all of the time that is put into preparing the photos. The session itself usually takes 1-3 hours, and then the photos are uploaded, edited, and shared, which normally takes about 3 hours, according to photographer Marirosa Anderson of Photography by Marirosa. Couples often choose to use these photos in items such as save the dates, which usually involve 2-3 revisions, and this can take an additional 3 hours.
Although engagement sessions can add to the cost of your package, they are a very special experience for you as a couple, and you can also use them to make some great keepsakes. Massachusetts photographer, Sarah Fantom recommends making your engagement pictures into a guest signing book or a signing board for the wedding. The possibilities for the photos are endless, from invitations to slide shows, so take advantage of this great opportunity that your wedding photographer offers!

Who says planning a wedding is simple especially when it comes time to ask, “What’s this going to cost us?” As we know, many factors play into this daunting thought and we often wonder why some aspects of a wedding are so darn expensive. This very thought lead us to create a new my Kate Parker Wedding series, first focusing on wedding photography. This series features myKPW photographers as they give us a more in-depth, behind-the scenes look into the wedding photography industry.
So why can wedding photography be so expensive? We learned from several photographers that this isn’t a quick answer, as several factors were brought to our attention through pages and pages of entries which seemed more like term papers. Wow, we really hit something here! After reading through all of the entries, we’ve been able to summarize a handful of main factors that play into the cost of wedding photography. So factor number 1:
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
New Hampshire photographer, Matthew Lomanno quoted James McNeill Whistler (a British-based artist and painter), “An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision.” Well put and actually well fitted for this topic. For many photographers, their vision is based on education and actual experience. Sure there is a such thing as raw talent, however would you trust a surgeon who has a steady hand but no practical experience? This isn’t to say that all photographers need to have years and years of schooling to be good, but it’s seen as an advantage in such a competitive industry. Vermont photographer, Kathleen Porter of North Photography, revealed that her pricing is related to the level of the photographer’s expertise:
“Many people can pick up a camera, set it to auto and capture a few decent images. I’ve seen it done! But over the years, a professional photographer develops an eye for detail and a mind for the flow of a wedding day. They even have experience with the things we do not want to think about occurring on the wedding day. Pouring rain? No problem! One hundred degree weather and no clouds? Easy. Hurricane on the coast? Sure. Drunken uncle during family photos? A walk in the park. We’ve been there and know what we are doing.”
To be a little more specific, many photographers have gone to school for photography, but must also constantly stay in the know and learn new techniques and practices. In today’s wedding world, trends are always changing and as we all know, everyone wants the latest and greatest. It’s not easy to keep up in this fast-changing industry as Savannah photographerScott Hopkins points out:
“Photography is an art that requires continuing education. As client preferences change, photographers have to learn new approaches to their craft. Seminars, both online and in-person, can run several hundreds of dollars and multi-day workshops can run several thousands of dollars.”
“Wedding photography, like all photography, is an art – one that requires learning and practice. All professional photographers invest their time and money on education in order to stay up to date on new techniques and to grow their craft. Education for photographers can include workshops, seminars and apprenticeships. Even after all of that there is more to learn! Photographers spend a lot of their time learning and practicing new techniques before your wedding.
What does this mean to you? Having a photographer that is committed to improving their skills, who will stay up to date on technological advances and who will practice, practice, practice results in rock-star pictures of your wedding day!”
The money that photographers spend to enhance their education directly benefits the clients, because it refines their ability to capture one of the most important days of your life- and this is no easy task! Matthew Lomanno continues to relate constant education to a photographer’s vision when he says:
“Developing and establishing a vision and style can take a considerable amount of experience of both photography in general and weddings in particular: For me, that means having manual control of the camera (no automatic settings), and knowing how to anticipate and react to events, actions, and expressions (there are no second chances in a wedding). How does one measure such things?”
Well, although a vision cannot be measured, it can be felt in the emotion and nuances of your photos, and this makes a quality photographer well worth the price.
