One of the most common questions or concerns I tend to hear about in the wedding industry is why does this cost so much? And while that seems to be asked of every wedding service, I’d like to address the cost of custom stationery and invitations.  When you order a custom invitation, your stationer isn’t taking a stock design, dropping in your wording and shipping them off to a printer. Typically, there is an in person meeting if you are close in geography, a flurry of e-mails, rounds of proofs and perhaps a number of phone conversations or in person meetings. This doesn’t even take into account the time your designer might spend on creating or altering graphics to suit your particular wants. So before you even get to printing, your designer could be any where from 3-10 hours into your project.

Today is Rustic Monday! So, What IS Rustic?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Today is Rustic Monday on my Kate Parker Wedding.  Since it is our first ever Rustic Monday, we thought it would be a good idea to give examples of what “rustic” actually is.  Many weddings have rustic aspects mixed in with a vintage styled wedding.  We decided to show some rustic elements of weddings, like a wedding gown, table scape, and wedding decor in order to sort of define what rustic is.  We hope you enjoy our first of many Rustic Mondays!

Rustic Wedding Gown and Rustic Bouquet:

Why is this rustic? Sunflowers are wildflowers, which gives them a very organic and natural look.  The gown in the photographs has an empire waist with lace embroidery giving it a rustic look.

Rustic Wedding Ceremony:

Vendors Involved:  New Hampshire wedding photographer, Melissa Koren Photography

Why is this rustic?  I think “barn” simply does it.  Barns are exactly what what comes to my mind when I hear “rustic wedding”.

The aged wood and the outdoor location are a natural look for a wedding ceremony.

Rustic Wedding Reception Venue:

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding photographerCarla Ten Eyck Photography

Why is this rustic?  The wooden floors and walls make for a very rustic style. Using paper lanterns above instead of chandeliers gives a dim and more natural lighting to the space.

Rustic Wedding Cuisine:

Rustic Monday

Vendors Involved: Connecticut wedding caterer, La Cuisine

Why is this rustic?  This caterer chose to cook in large metal woks on open heat which gives the cuisine an organic twist.

Connecticut Paper Products, Tulaloo, Gives Advice

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Connecticut Paper ProductsTulaloo, is a member of my Kate Parker Wedding and gives some great advice about paper products and the wedding industry.  Check out these five helpful tips from Tulaloo!

1. Don’t be shy about sharing your ideas, even if they seem silly. If you are wondering whether we can design a wedding invitation based around your vintage wedding gown, ask us!

2. Order more invitations then you think you need. There is a very good chance your mom or your future in laws are going to add more people to their guest list!

3. Create cohesive look for your wedding by choosing a great stationery design and using it throughout your wedding. When everything coordinates, your event looks stylish and sophisticated. Having a monogram designed is a great way to do this, since it can be used on your invitations, programs, escort cards, cocktail napkins…it can even be iced on your wedding cake!

4. If you are going to include several enclosure cards with your invitation, ask about the best way to present the invitation suite. There are lots of options including pocketfolds, pochettes, belly bands and ribbon.

5. If you are working on a budget, let your stationery designer know. A good designer will show you options that are appropriate for your wedding and your budget.

New England and NYC/Westchester County Wedding Paper Products: Lasso’d Moon Designs, Advice & Trends

New England and NYC/Westchester County wedding paper products, Lasso’d Moon Designs, shares tips, advice, and trends in wedding stationery on my Kate Parker Wedding.  Check it out!

If I could pass on some advice about working with a custom stationer, I would say:
1) There’s a limited number of papers available, so we might not be able to match your bridesmaids dresses exactly, but we can do wonders with font colors.
2) Don’t be afraid to ask for help- that’s what we’re here for. A good stationer should be able to help you narrow down what’s going to be best for what you need. It can be an overwhelming process with so many choices.
3) The design process is give and take. It might take a little time to get it right, so I recommend starting the invitation design process 6 months before you’d like to send your invitations out (though 9-12 months if you’re going to send out save the dates).

As for trends, I’m really just seeing a rise in couples do fun, brighter invitations that are more reflective of their personalities rather than what they think is “in”. That’s when you end up with an amazing design.
