Maine and New Hampshire DJ: Scott Langlois of Cuzin Richard Entertainment

DJ Scott Langlois is not only a part of Cuzin Richard Entertainment, he’s also a dear friend to the Parker family.  His understanding of music and the wedding industry allows him to reflect the style of any event.  Check out our interview with Scott!

What is your favorite part of the wedding? The initial meeting, sort of a first date in a way.  I joke a little to put them at ease, then we usually talk about music, what they like and don’t like.   How they see the style and the flow of their wedding. Also, when the dance floor is packed to a song that the bride and groom specifically asked be played or dedicated, you can feel the energy and the hair on the back of your neck.

What do you love most about your job in the wedding industry? Working with the clients, vendors, guests and of course, the music.

What is the biggest misconception about your industry? That all DJ’S are circus acts or cheesy or that we all have to play the same 100 songs.

How did you get into the wedding industry? I started to DJ right after high school and into college and after graduation former classmates or clients would ask if we did weddings and I said “SURE!” and then had to find out how.  I did this for years along with a day job, which I left over 18 years ago to do this full-time.

Tell me one wedding vendor other than your industry you highly recommend? Owen Dyer of Confection Art.  He makes the most detailed cakes.  If Duff is the “Ace of Cakes” then Owen is the king of cakes.

Tell me one wedding vendor in your industry you highly recommend? DJ and pianist Ryan Parker.  At the risk of sounding like a brown nose,  Ryan can offer the combination of live piano for ceremonies, cocktail hour and dinner, and add a musician or two or three and then DJ the rest of the reception and do it a style that is similar to mine.  It makes it easy to recommend him when I can’t do the event and vice versa.

Favorite wedding Story – funny or serious.

Serious:  I did a wedding in Kennebunkport the Friday after 9/11.  The bride and groom thought about canceling, but guests still wanted to attend and already planned on it.  The wedding was still fun in spite of the week’s events and I convinced the bride and groom to let me play God Bless America after their last song and everyone joined hands and sang the song with a whole different perspective.  I still get goose bumps just thinking about it.

Funny:  I did a Wedding where the mother of the groom called me the week before and asked if I would play Benny and the Jets because it was a family tradition and that she would cue me when the time was right.  Well the wedding was almost over and she asked to play it next. They darkened the room and the mother and the rest of the groom’s brought out this big candle and lit it. They then got in line and proceeded to walk over it and the flame was between their legs moving to the slow beat of the song almost treating the candle like a reverse limbo pole, getting as close to the flame without catching fire. Once they had all gone through the line, they went into the crowd and got everyone else to do the same and it took playing the song about 3 times to get everyone through.  Every time I hear the song now I swear something’s burning!

What other part of the industry would you not want to work in? It would have to a florist.  My sister owned a flower shop in Dover in the late 80’s and early 90’s and I’d help out form time to time during the peak months and it seemed the more she worked the less she made.

What differentiates you from the rest of your industry?  I am the anti-DJ.  I  don’t use props or play games — nothing cheesy.  I don’t make the event about me, it’s suppose to be about the bride and groom.  I am really into the music. I put a lot of advance preparation into what is played at the cocktail hour, dinner and when it’s time to dance.

One Response to “Maine and New Hampshire DJ: Scott Langlois of Cuzin Richard Entertainment”

  1. Love his perspective on DJ’s. Especially like the 9/11 story. That was a very intense time and I can only imagine the emotion when playing God Bless America.

    Thanks for sharing
